I was diagnosed with strep 4 days ago and began taking penicillin. today when i woke up i was coughing up bloody phlegm--- is this a usual symptom?

No: But can occur with severe infection due to rupture of small blood vessels with coughing, or due to disruption of tissues by the toxins produced by this nasty organism. If it continues would go back to see the doctor.
