Depends on effect: Iron is best absorbed on an empty stomach but, if you experience nausea, diarrhea, or cramps after taking iron then it is best to eat a small amount of food approximately 2 hours before taking iron supplements. Avoid consuming high fiber foods, milk, calcium, antacids or caffeine at the same time you take the iron.
