What is tmj of the jaw or tmd?

Temporomandibular : Temporomandibular joint is the hinged joint on each side of your head by your ears. Tmd is the name of various disorders of the tmj. Tmd sufferers experience headaches, inabilty to open wide, shooting pain up the sides of the face and tightness on the jaw muscles. A dentist can help alleviate these symptoms. Decreasing stress, limiting caffeine and chewing gum can help.

TMD: Tmd means temperomandibular disorder of the TMJ (tempero - mandibular joint) any issues with the bone or the cartilage could be defined as tmd resulting in soreness, headaches, jaw pain when opening.

Anatomy vs symptoms: When i explain tmj/tmd to my patients, i tell them that everyone has TMJ (unless some type of mutation, cancer or accident.) TMJ is the anatomy of the jaw joints- (t) temporal bone on upper maxilla; (m) mandible- lower jaw; (j) joints- where the two meet in a complex of tendons, ligaments, etc. Tmd are the symptoms exhibited by someone who has a problem with the TMJ complex. Tmjd is TMJ dysfunc.

TMJ is the jaw: TMJ refers to the jaw joint - the temporomandibular joint. The word "TMJ" also refers collectively to problems of that joint. TMJ also collectively refers to problems of the joint - "Temporomandibular Joint Disorders".
