Ice then heat: The swelling secondary to an extraction will peak 24-48 hours after the surgery. For the first 24 hours you should apply ice packs to the outside of the face, 15 minutes on-15 minutes off. After that you can use warm moist compresses. 24 hours after surgery you should also start rinsing with warm salt water. Nsaid's like advil (ibuprofen) help. These things along with time will allow the swelling to resolve.

Ice: The best option is to use ice. Also, minimize any strenuous activity and can take a mini steroid pill pack.
