If kidney diseased..: Kidneys can leak protein if the kidneys are diseased. Proteinuria is a very sensitive predictor of development of progressive renal insufficiency, particularly when looking at high molecular weight proteins such as immunoglobulin g (igg), as predictors of chronic kidney disease progression. In some cases, mild proteinuria can occur without kidney disease.
