Oral surgeon: For impacted wisdom teeth, you should see an oral surgeon. Not only are they skilled at removing these teeth, but they are usually equipped to provide heavy sedation and/or general anesthesia in their office to handle your anxiety.

Oral surgeon: Oral surgeons can sedate you so you are not aware of the dental extraction proceedure. Iv sedation does involve a needle, but you wil not remember much after that. Nitrous oxide does not use a needle to sedate you, but you will know that the dentsit is giving you shots to take the teeth out.

We will encounter: Needles a number of times throughout our lives. If you don't want to be a slave to your phobia - consider working with a therapist who is knowledgable about cognitive behavioral therapy. Good luck.

Valium Rx ; see OS: Get your treating surgeon to rx a mild sedative, have someone escort you to an oral surgeon that will "put you under." not much to fear about general anesthesia. Tip: make sure you have flossed daily for a few weeks prior to oral surgery. Much more effective than just tooth brushing, flossing will lower your oral bacteria count and reduce the chance of an infected dry socket!

IV Sedation: What is probably best for you is to have a consult with an oral surgeon and discuss IV sedation. I have had many patients over the years who are terrified of oral injections, dentists and dental treatment. None have reported back to me that their experience was anything other than surprisingly pleasant (other than some post operative swelling and discomfort).

CBT: Seek a cognitive-behavioral therapist who specializes in phobias. One method they use is systematic desensitization which slowly and incrementally brings the person closer and closer to the thing they are afraid of in slow, graduated steps that help make the anxiety more tolerable.
