Pre-appt relaxation: The fear of dental treatment, and of the needles involved, is a deep and common fear among many patients. Confidence and trust in your dentist helps, but for extractions, medications may be the most reliable aid. Pre-operative sedation medication by mouth is helpful and may be enough for lessor procedures. More involved surgeries may require IV sedation so that the patient is not aware during it.

Fear of needles: Dentists hear this all the time. Some suggestions--bring your ipod to listen to music when you are at the dental office. Request that the dentist use a topical anesthetic get before the injections, keep your eyes closed, breathe in and out through your nose. If you are really scared ask your dentist to refer you to an oral surgeon who can sedate you for the procedure.

CBT: Seek a cognitive-behavioral therapist who specializes in phobias. One method they use is systematic desensitization which slowly and incrementally brings the person closer and closer to the thing they are afraid of in slow, graduated steps that help make the anxiety more tolerable.
