Why do i need a root canal if having a crown replaced?

Pulp issue: By the time a crown is needed, a tooth has sustained a lot of damage...Either from, cavities/fillings, broken/chipped, grinding/clenching, to name a few. Rct is typically done before crowning these types of damaged teeth to prevent an abcess forming after the crown is placed. If a rct has been done already, then crowning is recommended to strengthen the tooth/enamel structure.

Why?: Root canal is needed for two reasons decay has exposed the pulp and root canal needed to eliminate or prevent infection or there is insufficient tooth present to support the crown so root canal needed to get a stable core in the tooth to support the crown.

Ask the dentist...: It seems there is a good reason for it. The most common reason would be that the decay was very deep and infected the pulpal tissues within the tooth. Secondly, so much tooth structure may have been missing following removing the existing filling and decay. By performing a root canal, a post can be placed within the tooth to support a buildup material that would replace the missing structure.
