Muscle spasm likely: A large variety of back issues become more symptomatic during cold weather, regardless of initial cause. Several mechanism may be at work: muscle spasm (both direct & indirect effects), alteration of chemical messengers in the body, effects on central nervous system pain networks. So keep warm, wear several layers of clothing, try topical agents which produce warmth or use heating pads--20 minutes.
