Always an option: The answer depends on why you want a second opinion. Most centers have more than one pathologist so they typically run tough cases with each other before making the final call. If the result was benign, i typically would not ask for a second opinion but will observe the nodules over time. The only time i would ask for a second opinion is when the result comes back "indeterminate.".

It depends: Thyroid cytology requires expertise in some cases. If you are not sure of the expertise of the person reading the cytology you should ask for a second opinion. If you just dont like the conclusion, but they are expert, then you need to have an expert surgeon or endocrinologist who will take the time to explain why the treatment is appropriate and safe.
