Can minimize pain: Since a biopsy involves the use of a sharp instrument to sample a body tissue, it cannot be truly pain-free unless you are under anesthesia (which is not usually done with thyroid biopsies). However, an expert thyroid doctor can help minimize patient's pain by using 25-gauge needle (thinner than blood-draw needles) , avoid lateral probing motions, and use good technique to minimize # of passes.
