Re-test: Your level of TSH is borderline, and your doctor may want to see persistent elevation. However, since you're symptomatic, additional thyroid tests, including autoantibodies, should be evaluated. Given your family history, waiting is one option, but others might start you on a low dose of thyroxine. Maybe arrange a call with your doctor to assure yourself of doc's reason for the slow approach.

Talk to your doc: You might want to discuss this with your doctor to get his/her reason but at the very least, make sure on the next blood test, you are also checking for thyroid peroxidase antibodies (tpo antibodies). If this comes back positive, then you have hashimoto's thyroid disease and there is no reason to wait any longer.
