Meat: First and foremost. So is liver. "politically correct" ads showing beans, tofu, spinach, and peanut butter are misleading. Vegetarians who do not know exactly what they are doing tend to become iron-deficient -- and if you are iron-deficient, you've been done a terrible disservice. Look also for possible sources of bleeding if you're diagnosed. Good luck.

Do you like beans?: Meat is your best source of available iron, especially red meat. I respect my peers who won't eat it for ethical reasons; i doubt the strong link to illness that others have claimed, recognizing that real valid studies are hard to do. Beans are quite a good source; iron in spinach is unavailable because it's bound to substances. I'd urge non-meat-eaters to consider supplementing.

Meats, fish, chicken: The best sources of dietary iron are meats, including beef, fish and seafood, and chicken. Liver is another excellent source of iron. Plant sources of dietary iron include beans, peas, broccoli and spinach as well as many fruits like raisins, apricots, peaches and prunes. Nuts have some iron and many cereals have iron added to them.

Are you a good chef?: There are plenty of foods containing high amount of iron, but the tastes depend on how they are prepared. Sample of some are pictured here. They aren't: Vegetarians exert a lot of influence in the usa, and government publications about "iron-rich foods" include stuff like spinach, which is loaded with iron that you can't absorb or use. Your best source of iron if you do not supplement is meat and liver. If you are found to be iron-deficient, your physician will try to determine why so as not to miss serious disease causing blood loss.
