Staying healthy: Eating a well balanced diet and getting enough sleep on a regular basis is a good place to start. Getting regular exercise, specially 45-60 minutes per day will also help a lot. Exercise boosts the levels of endorphins, our bodies own natural feel good neurotransmitter. Some suggest omega 3 fatty acids like fish oil, 2000-4000 mgs per day to help stabilize one's mood.

Depression: Try to remind yourself that episodes have an end point. Until you get there, and despite your lower motivation and energy, engage in exercise, go for walks, read - even if these activities are difficult for you to accomplish.
