Tell your Doctor: I appreciate your apprehension, but if you trust your doctor to make the best decision in your behalf, you need to be able to also trust your doctor with information you stated. I have had this situation come up many times, and I have often decided that if a patient tells me things of a potentially dangerous nature-that means the patient just needs help and we can then best work thru it together.

Depression & drugs: Inpatient hospitalization is not a punitive act. It's used when the patient cannot guarantee his/her own safety as an outpatient, and temporarily needs a more contained environment for treatment. Yes, your doctor needs to know how you're feeling & thinking, as well as your ability to keep yourself safe as an outpatient continuing to work on your problems. You may not need inpatient at this time.

Relapse?: Not sure if you mean a relapse into depression or a relapse onto a substance/alcohol? Regardless u should let your doctor know. Thoughts are one thing, planning and intent are another. Unless u are at immediate risk to yourself or others, it is very unlikely that you would require inpatient treatment.
