Should a partial denture fit snuggly or have gaps?

Snuggly: Snuggly, but comfortable. With time, 5-7 yrs, space may occur because the gum and bone continue to shrink over time.

Snuggly is best.: The partial may have to have gaps where you have undercuts on your gums when it was made new or if the partial is old. You bone and gum tissue get smaller (resorb) over time creating space under yur partial. Ask you dentist about relining a newer prtial or remaking an older partial (over 5 years old). The more contact the partial pink acrylic has with your gums the better the fit.

Both can occur: Should fit snugly, unless the contours of the mouth and teeth prevent this. Sometimes the angles of the teeth and the undercuts of the tissues do not permit a snug fit everywhere. But, most areas should be snug.

Both: With a partial there may be areas of gaps that cannot be avoided. These gaps would exist not under the partial but rather beside it or under the clasps if clasps exist....

Should fit snug: A partial denture has some getting used to. You must make sure you have it in place properly first. Once it is positioned properly, it should fit snug up against the other teeth. The hooks and wires should fit around the other teeth very well. I'd recommend seeing your dentist for a checkup so he or she can demonstate to you how to properly insert and remove it. Plus, make any adjustments.

Snug: Especially when first delivered a partial denture should be snug and comfortable. Due to bone and soft tissue changes over time the denture may become looser. As long as you can still function comfortably there shouldnt be any problems with your partial/.
