Contact: When two teeth touch each other side by side we call that "tooth contact". When that contact is too tight or too loose food gets stuck there because the contact should be just right.

See your dentist: Food generally gets stuck between teeth due to spaces that can occur over time as the result of periodontal disease. Broken restorations can also allow food to collect. See your dentist so you can make sure there are no broken restorations. Have a cleaning and let the dentist or hygienist show you how to clean properly.

Pocket Formation: Perio disease leads to bone loss and "pocket" formation. This allows food to become trapped in these pockets and also allows shifting of teeth. With shifting there is more inter-proximal space and food gets caught here also.

Spacing issues: After crowns, often food gets caught between teeth. Use dental floss regularly, discuss with your dentist.
