High sensitivity: A mostly female affliction, this is due to hypersensitivity of sensory nerves to stimulation, for reasons as yet unknown. Pain seems to arise in soft tissues, not in bones or in the nerves themselves. Often the condition can resolve, though it may take years. Symptomatic treatment includes pain modifying drugs plus specially tailored physical exercise, perhaps also training in coping.

Pain syndrome: Fms is a chronic pain syndrome. Patients have widespread pain for 3 months or longer. They often have fatigue and sleep problems. The pain is thought to be from a hypersensitive nervous system. Successful treatment requires a multi-disciplinary approach. Some types of exercise can be helpful. The fda- approved meds include: lyrica, cymbalta, and savella (milnacipran). They turn down the volume on the pain.
