Calf Pain: Most likely sounds like a disk herniation. A disk herniation can cause back pain and shooting pain into the calf and foot, even with numbness. Other back conditions, such as spondylolithesis, can cause this as well.

Disc disease: Back and leg pain/ spasms can come from disc herniations or referred pain from disc degeneration. Usually the symptoms will resolve after 6 weeks. For persistent symptoms, a lumbar MRI can show whether the nerve is being compressed. Physical therapy and injections can calm things down. Surgery is reserved for those with disc herniations that don't respond to anything else.
