A member asked:

39wks. pregnant and believed to have already lost my mucus plug, it was red, as the day went on brown pieces came out. is this normal?

This finding is not : This finding is not rare. Some patients start labor with uterine contractions that they are not aware of. The brown discharge usually reflects early signs of intermittent contractions, and a breaking down of the cervical plug.. Be sure to consult your ob. He will not necessarily need to see you, his call.

Yes.: Loss/passage of your cervical mucus plug portends good prognosis for entering active labor soon. Darker blood clots/spots are normal and indicate little bleeding which is commonly seen with early labor and cervical opening/softening. Stay close to your birthing center and take it easy while monitoring your fetus' activity to assure excellent perinatal outcome. Best of luck!
