Mucous : Your cervix makes mucous your whole life. During pregnancy the amount of mucus production increases. Towards the end of pregnancy there's quite a lot. As you start to dilate it slowly starts to come out. Think of the mucus present in your nose. Your cervix works the same way. It's less exciting when you think about it that way.
