Common: Babies can get a group a strep infection that involves all the structures of the nasal passages & the back of the throat.They are treated the same as older kids. Their tonsils are not fully developed at that point. Babies can also carry strep in the same area & not become sick, a process called the carrier state.

Of course they can: I. Was taught that in medical school too, and it wasn't true then either. It doesn't happen often, but it definitely occurs. A baby with a fever and a known strep positive contact should be tested.

Rarely: There may be a strep carrier in the household that colonized the baby such that strep were recovered but weren't causative of the illness. Or it was a different strain of strep than group a. If it was group a strep and the baby was sick then it is important to treat.
