Rule out Inf Mono: What do you mean "he got tested and he is clean?" if he has infectious mononucleosis (eb virus) he may have already developed immunity and passed the virus on to you. Infectious mononucleosis is common in your age group and is transmitted exactly as you describe. It could, of course, be any viral infection. I would advise a mono spot test.
