How do you know?: 6 week olds don't usually get sore throats (pharyngitis) unless their mom has it too. If it does occur, it's almost always viral. The only concern in this era is whooping cough. If the baby is having trouble sucking, then tylenol (acetaminophen) should relieve his pain so he can eat.

Work up/mgt: If your baby's cry is hoarse or raspy, this condition may be due to a number of possible causes. These include a viral illness, an infection, anatomic changes in the airway affecting the larynx and vocal cords. I would suggest checking the temperature, using a vaporizer and gently suctioning the nasal passages with saline. A call to let your physician know, so that you can follow up is important.
