You are doing right: You are doing the right thing to give him pain meds, but it may need to be repeated every 4to6 hours depending on what you are using.He should see the pediatrician to find if it is strep throat which will need to be treated with antibiotics.

Non rx options: Sorry that's no fun for anyone. Alternating cildren's tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin can help. A teaspoon of honey can be soothing too. Gargling salt water can be tricky for kids but it can also help too. If they can gargle (and spit out) well, a half-teaspoon of Benadryl and a half teaspoon of children's maalox or mylanta can be gargled too.
