Mri: The type of knee injury can be determined usually with a history and physical exam. An MRI will allow a clear visualization of the internal structures of hte joint and will help confirm the exact patholgy.

Symptoms, H&P, MRI: In general ACL injuries result in instability--that is giving way--the knee feels loose or wobbly when trying to pivot, cut, change direction quickly, or land from a jump. Cartilage damage tends to cause swelling, catching, grinding, locking, or other "mechanical symptoms." ACL tears can usually be detected on physical examination. An MRI can confirm the history and physical exam findings.
