Usually allergic: Itching and swelling are usually due to some allergic reaction (the reaction releases histamine, which causes itching and swelling). Sometimes the cause of the allergic reaction is unknown, while other times it can be: foods, medications, plants, bug bites, chemicals, pets, etc... Taking antihistamines should help, but serious symptoms mean a visit to the doctor or the E.R..
