Usually tingling: Carpal tunnel surgery is a compression of the median nerve at the wrist so symptoms involve that nerve and specifically sensory symptoms such as generalized discomfort of the hand, numbness and tingling on the thumb side of the hand as well as motor changes and specifically weakness of the hand especially involving the thumb. Other conditions such as tendonitis and arthritis may be associated.

Numbness : Most people first notice numbness in their hands. Carpal tunnel syndrome is basically a pinched nerve in your wrist. As the nerve is deprived of blood, oxygen and nutrients it functions abnormally. As it progresses numbness turns to pain and the motor component of the nerve is affected causing weakness.
