Carpel Tunnel: Carpal tunnel syndrome typically starts gradually with a vague aching in your wrist that can extend to your hand or forearm. Common carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms include: tingling or numbness, pain radiating or extending, and a sense of weakness in your hands and a tendency to drop objects.

Possibly.: Entrapment of the median nerve (carpal tunnel syndrome) is possible as is inflammation of the sheaths surrounding the tendons (tendonitis). If resting your wrist, use of an ice pack and use of a "cock-up splint" doesn't alleviate the pain and swelling, see an orthopedic surgeon for a formal assessment of the problem.

Unlikely: Carpal tunnel is caused by entrapment of the median nerve in the carpal canal. It produces numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger. Swelling can be a component, but carpal tunnel at your age is extremely rare and usually due to a secondary cause. If this doesn't improve for you, i'd see a hand surgeon.

No: I agree and wanted to add that your wrist swelling is almost certainly an overuse syndrome involving tendonitis. Although it is not carpal tunnel syndrome, anything that causes wrist swelling can cause carpal tunnel syndrome secondarily. A physical or occupational therapist may be able to show you ways of avoiding recurrence of this problem by making a minor change in your handwriting technique.
