Absolutely: Herpes simplex, predominantly type 1 can produce meningitis, encephalitis and meningo-encephalitis. Type 2 has been implicated in recurrent viral meningitis, known as mollaret's meningitis previously. The varicella-zoster virus (another herpes virus) can affect nerve endings and also produces changes in the cerebrospinal fluid during shingles outbreaks.
