A member asked:

If my foot has a stress fracture and now has a bruise does that mean it's healing?

Depends: Bruising (black and blue) occurs after a fracture when blood slowly settles in the soft tissue. It will resolve in a few weeks. For a stress fracture to heal, it must be placed in a hard soled shoe to unload it from the movement of walking. Also, activities such as running must be stopped. It can then begin to heal. Calcitonin nasal spray, a naturally occurring hormone, usually helps heal the bone faster and decreases bone pain. Ask your orthopedist about it.

Nope: Not at all. A stress fracture generally takes 6-8 weeks to heal. I am a big advocate of checking vitamin d levels when diagnosed with a stress fracture. The bruise has nothing to do with the rate of bone healing.

Not necessarily: The bruise on your foot is not related to the healing of your stress fracture. The stress fracture can take several weeks to heal.

No: The appearance of a bruise means blood is near the surface. Your stress fracture should heal in6 to 8 weeks.
