A member asked:

I have swelling and bruising on my instep after a possible stress fracture on my 5th metatarsal; can these be connected? what is causing the swelling?

Yes: Stress fracture, just like any other fracture causes swelling and bruising. The difference is that stress fracture results from over uses and pressure on the bone versus other fractures that are usually caused by trauma. Treatments of most of the foot fractures including stress fracture is immobilization along with compression, rest and elevation.
