Why is painful?: We need to define your pain. It could be joint, muscle, tendon, bursa, cartilage or referred pain. Is there swelling? Is it tender to touch? Where? Is it the kneecap? Is it on the outside or inside of the joint? Is it the lateral or medial side? We need to define the type of pain to help your evaluation. Those will be what your physician will look for?
