A member asked:

What's an external fixator?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Fracture stabilizer : Some fractures are treated with external fixation instead of internal fixation. Plates and screws are used to hold the broken ends of the bone together while the fracture heals. These devices are placed under the skin and muscles. An external fixator uses pins in the bone to connect with bars outside the body. Both accomplish the same goal, to stabilize the fracture until it heals.
