What causes temper tantrums?

Read on: If it is the two year old it is the inability to express their needs, as well as it is the developmental time when the self is taking over ignoring all but their own need. I guess it's the same etiology for teens and all ages.

At what age? : Children do what works for them. An oppositional or non-compliant child " wins" when he his behavior is given negative or positive attention, rather than being ignored. Rules & consequences should be explained, then followed through immediately & consistentky. Walk, don't talk or make eye contact, to time out, as many times as needed till he gets it. Set timer for 1min/yr of age when he's quiet.

Frustration: Temper tantrums are often the result of a child's frustration. They are part of the normal growth and development. Concerning if they are triggered by minimal issues and last for prolonged periods of time - over 30-40 minutes - especially if there are concerns about developmental/language delay. See your MD if the issues seem extreme for a developmental check up. http://www.medicinenet.com/temper_tantrums/article.htm
