Exercise: The best way to strengthen the back is with exercise, typically to what we refer to as the "core". That would include abdominal strengthening, but exercises such as swimming and pilates also help. Sometimes a course of treatment with a physical therapist can help, to make sure that the exercises are properly taught and performed.

Stretching first: Lay on back, bend knees towards chest. Hands rest on knees. Take up slack towards chest. Now, activate your arms to keep knees where they are while you push your knees into your hands for 5 secs. Relax. Take up slack. Repeat 3x.
