It depends : On how long ago the extraction was, how difficult was, etc. If it has been over a week, then, in general, something is not right about the healing and you should see the dentist who extracted the tooth.

It can hurt awhile: How long ago did you have the tooth extraction? It is quite normal for it to hurt for a few days and be sore for a few weeks. If you have any swelling, pus, or other questions, call the dentist who did the treatment right away. Salt water rinsing is fine. Be gentle.

Soreness: Soreness may last for a few days following extraction and use of ibuprophen will help as well as warm salt water rinses.

How namy days?: Are you gargling or rinsing? Gargling is in the throat and will have no benefit . Rinsing for 1- 2 minutes with and anteseptic or 1-2 pinches of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, no more salt! is helpful also.
