Dermal papillae: Are projections of the connective tissue of the skin into and around the top layers of the skin, the epidermis. Try to picture an egg carton - the dermal papillae are the parts of the carton that separate the eggs and keep them fron touching. The protrusions that hold the eggs are called rete ridges, and are part of the epidermis.
