Thyroidectomy: Long term effects of thyroidectomy depends on how much of the thyroid is removed. If only part of the thyroid is removed, the remaining portion typically takes over the function of the entire thyroid gland. You may just need to visit with your provider after the surgery to make sure everything is going well. Have your doctor order a thyroid panel to help assess the need for hormone therapy.
