Is an unmedicated birth safer for the baby than having an epidural or pain meds?

No/maybe: By design, epidural analgesia during labor results in minimal exposure of your baby to medication. Research indicates that having an epidural may increase the duration of labor by about 30 minutes and cause a mild fever in the mother. Neither of these things is harmful to your baby. Some pain medicines may cause your baby to be sedated at delivery, but these are usually not used during labor.
