LOW: Pian from herniated disc is usually into the buttock or leg.Intrinsic low back pain is often better treated "conservatively"; gentle exercise, nsaids, traction and in my practice, a short trial of osteopathic manipulative therapy.

Approx 50 to 60 perc: If you only has problem in one disc then likelihood of cure is higher but if a lot. Of disc are affected then cure rate goes lower.

If due to a disc : If the back symptoms were due only to the disc herniation, symptom relief occurs in 90% after this surgery if not a smoker. Typically, the back pain is not the primary component of symptoms related to a disc herniation in the first place. So there may be other reasons for ongoing back pain not addressed by surgery. About 10% of people with surgery get back pain later due to further degeneration.

Fair: Microdiscectomy is indicated for pain into your leg not back pain. If you have only back pain surgery is not usually recommended.

Unknown to poor: Under 50/50 backache is not the target symptom for discectomy a discectomy for backache is experimental. Just because you have a pain and a disc herniation you can't assume the herniation is the cause of your target symptom. Diagnostic injections can close the cause effect loop in logically arriving at this assumption so common to failed surgeries.
