Sprain/strain/stress: Running can cause micro -trauma in the form of ankle strains/sprains or stress fractures. The next step is to stop running, ice it (30 min on/30 min. Off) and get seen. Initial xrays may be negative so additional imaging may be needed (e.g. Mri or bone scan).

Stress fracture: With the long distance running it is likely that the bone has "cracked" from the stresses put upon it. Most doctors diagnose this upon examination, but sometimes an MRI is needed for early diagnosis, because it wouldn't show on xrays for about 2 weeks. In the meantime- r.I.C.E.- rest, ice, compression, elevation.

Sprain/fracture: Either a severe sprain or fracture. Have it examined and x-rayed. Do not attempt to run again. Keep elevated.

See a doctor: If you have pain, swelling and bruising and if it is not improving you want to have it checked out. Perhaps the cartilage in your ankle joint got irritated, or you may have strained ligaments. You want to make sure you do not have a stress fracture- x-rays and other diagnostic tests can help determine that. Good luck!

See a doctor: You may have a stress fracture. I would suggest a visit to the doctor for x-rays.
