Sprain/strain/stress: Running can cause micro -trauma in the form of ankle strains/sprains or stress fractures. The next step is to stop running, ice it (30 min on/30 min. Off) and get seen. Initial xrays may be negative so additional imaging may be needed (e.g. Mri or bone scan).

Possible Fracture: The area i think you are describing is the base of the fifth metatarsal. This is a common bone to break. You need to be checked out.

Possible break: This could be a stress fracture to the heel or ankle bone. You need to get an xray from your podiatrist to determine if this is the reason. Other causes are tendonitis to the area, bursitis of the achilles tendon to name a few. If you are a serious runner, than you need to have a good sports podiatrist that can help you with this and get you back running quickly.
