Braces: Most people complain more about the spacers then the braces. It just feels like a big chunk of meet stuck in between your teeth.

Spacers: Not only are spacers uncomfortable in their own right (it causes an immediate force), but it is the first encounter with orthodontic discomfort a patient feels. They are truly annoying. These days I am able to bond braces directly to the molars (than i used to) and in doing so avoid use of spacers altogether.

Differs: Patients have differing opinions on discomfort from each one. The key is what to do to alleviate that discomfort. Taking an analgesic like Motrin an hour before your appointment when you anticipate pain is best. Warm salt water rinses and analgesics are great strategies.
