Brush it: Brush your retainer at least once a day when your brush your teeth. If there is hard buildup on it, take it to the dentist office to have it removed professionally. Plaque can build up on the retainer just like on teeth, so brush it frequently to keep it clean.

Soaking Solution: Get a denture cleanser that is ok for "partial dentures" and follow the instructions to soak your retainer in this solution just like a partial denture.

Do Not Brush: Toothbrush scrubbing cleans the wires but leaves microscopic scratches in the acrylic. These scratches harbor bacteria and allow discoloration and bad odors to develop. Rinse the retainer thoroughly, then let it soak in hydrogen peroxide or mouthwash for several hours. Rinse well, then back in your mouth!

Use Dishsoap: Cleaning a removable dental retainer with wires can easily and effectively be done using simple dish washing soap such as dial or palmolive. Just make sure to rinse it off thoroughly before putting it back in your mouth. Using toothpaste is not advised, as the abrasive in the toothpaste can scratch the acrylic portion leading to micro holes and the accumulation of bacteria, leading to bad breath.
