At what age do you get cataracts usually?

Varies : If you have certain diseases, or take Prednisone it can be even in 30s or earlier. Most patients are 60 or older, but many patients i see from africa are younger. There is also a condition, hypo Alpha protein where the patient is 40-50, and is very subtle and difficult to diagnose, but the patient is symptomatic. I have seen 15 such patients who were initially told there was nothing wron.

As early as 50: Cataract means "cloud" or "waterfall". Any change causing the natural lens to become less than crystal clear is technically a cataract. It may not be visually significant to you, but if you notice decreased vision, glare from lights or poor reading vision, it may mean cataracts. Since the procedure is so much more successful with better visual results, we tend to perform it on younger patients.
