Alcohol is a CNS dep: Alcohol is a CNS (brain) depressant meaning it shuts down many of the brain's automatic controls over respiration, heart rate, etc. We also have a huger/satiety center in our brain which may also shut down and may lose appetite or eat voraciously. Moderate drinking usually does not have such effect. Alcohol also is high caloric intake with little nutritional value.
