It's complicated.: In some families, there is a genetic predisposition to cancers, so the presence of one type may indicate the person inherited a condition that predisposes to others. In some cancers that affect the immune system, getting random other cancers is more likely. A smoker with one cancer is at risk for many others. Finally, chemotherapy and radiation can increase the risk of other cancers.
