At a very young : Age as they are growing up.Be consistent and be a role model to them! guide them and be consistent with discipline. They need respect as much as we do.Teach them good habits and manners. Have them repeat back and give them hugs and kisses or hi fives .Make it fun.

Very early: Learned behaviors start at 6 mos.; you can teach a lot by a year. At 15-16 mos., a toddler will " do what you do, not do what you say, " so model what you expect of him. At 18 mos. Developmental age a child can understand " time-out." "Little people" by Dr. Ed Christopherson is a good book . Keep your rules short, & what you want, e.g., "feet go on the floor, "not "don't stand up in that chair."
