A member asked:

Why are kussmaul respirations and acetone breath present in dka?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

KetoAcidosis : In DKA the body makes ketones as an alternate source of fuel for brain and heart when Insulin is too low to allow glucose to enter cells. Breath can smell fruity from ketones. Acids rise from dehydration and worsening ketosis. Kussmaul breathing (rapid breathing) blows off co2 in an effort for respiratory alkalosis to compensate as much as possible for metabolic acidosis.
